The Privacy Flag project is a European research project on personal data protection. Its experts in law and ICT have developed an innovative methodology – the Universal Privacy Risk Area Assessment Methodology (UPRAAM) – to assess the compliance of applications, websites, and Internet of Things deployments with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Swiss Data Protection law. Using the UPRAAM, Privacy Flag is developing a set of tools to enable citizens to check whether their rights as data subjects are being respected, and tools and services to help companies comply with personal data protection requirements. Privacy Flag is co-financed by the European Commission and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation.

The classic definition of privacy is the right of an individual or group to be let alone and protected against intrusion in their private life. This implies that a person can be selective in terms of what others should know about him/her and how public or private they want to be.
The privacy rights at issue may differ depending upon context. For example, information privacy sets out how information about a person – their personal data – can be legitimately collected, combined and distributed.
Privacy is a fundamental right of every EU citizen. Using their personal data to track and profile them, without their knowledge or permission, should be avoided. Individuals, as data subjects, need to be aware of how their Internet ‘digital footprint’ can be created, and the purposes for which their personal data may, or may not, be used.
The EU GDPR expands this protection, by recognizing the right of individuals to control use of their personal data, even after those data have been disclosed to the public. Privacy Flag provides methodologies and tools to ensure that these rights are respected.
Privacy Flag brings together European partners
to research and develop innovative methodologies and tools
